Gambit & Louisiana Weekly Endorse Morrell Senator JP Morrell received these endorsements from The Louisiana Weekly and Gambit Weekly.
It was his changes in the Omnibus Amendment to the State Budget that provided the $8 million to rehabilitate Methodist Hospital in New Orleans East. His background representing Jefferson Parish in his previous district has given him a regional perspective that will let him reach out to his new voters just drawn into District 3, in St. Bernard Parish. J.P. Morrell has a bright future as an African-American political leader, and the rising star needs our support in Saturday's election.
This Senate district now covers parts of three parishes, spreading from parts of St. Bernard through eastern New Orleans and the 9th Ward, then jumping across the river to Marrero. As the incumbent, Morrell understands the needs across parish lines, having represented Orleans and Jefferson parishes in the old District 3. He brought millions home to reopen Methodist Hospital in eastern New Orleans and is fighting to get additional FEMA funding for Nunez Community College in Chalmette. He also is on the forefront of efforts to redevelop Avondale Shipyards, which will close in the next few years. He is clearly the consensus candidate to tie this sprawling and diverse district together.

SENATOR MORRELL DELIVERS OVER $8 MILLION FOR NEW ORLEANS EAST HOSPITAL “Additional funding for the hospital in New Orleans East has been a top priority for the Orleans Parish Delegation and the Landrieu Administration,” says Morrell. “Capitol Outlay dollars are finite and in order to deliver on this priority for citizens of New Orleans, particularly New Orleans East, Gentilly and the Lower Ninth Ward, some difficult decisions had to be made. Some of what we wanted had to go unfunded so we can pay for what we needed.” Senator Morrell’s Amendment will provide that $3 million dollars that can be made available as a line of credit later this year upon approval of the State Bond Commission. In order to have this line of credit made available this year for hospital in New Orleans East; several other projects had their money reallocated to provide the immediate access to the funds. The remaining $5 million is located within the Priority 5 allocation, which means it will be made available next year. “The citizens of New Orleans have spoken loudly, and clearly,” Morrell continued, “with the slow pace of the LSU Midcity Teaching Hospital, we need the New Orleans East Hospital and we need it now.” The Capitol Outlay bill now heads to the House for concurrence.
