Hurricane Ida Resources

We got this, New Orleans. That was my message just after Ida tore across our city, and I've seen it realized everywhere I went this week.

Yet, many people are struggling. There's a lot of information out there about available resources, and I've been sharing as much as possible on social media. I've compiled and organized it all in one place below.

As always, if there's anything I can do, please contact me at info@JPMorrell.com.

We got this.

Staying Informed

  • Sign up to receive information from the city by texting NOLAREADY to 77295.

  • Check this calendar to see times and locations for cooling stations, meal distribution, first aid and more.

  • HurricaneRecovery.la.gov is now live. Any Louisianan affected by Hurricane Ida can use it to find important updates, information and links to resources.

  • Residents in the region can download the free GasBuddy app to see availability across the region. Users are also encouraged to update the app, so other residents may receive accurate and timely information as to which stations have gas. Buses will be limited to transporting roughly 2,300 people per day.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program helps individuals whose employment has been either lost or interrupted as a direct result of a major disaster.  DUA is available to unemployed workers or self-employed individuals who became unemployed as a direct result of Hurricane Ida that are otherwise ineligible to receive state unemployment insurance benefits.  Workers that are already receiving unemployment insurance benefits due to COVID-19 should continue filing weekly claims, and not DUA.  The deadline to file a DUA claim as a result of Hurricane Ida is October 4, 2021.  To learn more about the program and see if you are eligible, click here.

Pre-Register for DSNAP

DSNAP provides eligible households who do not currently receive SNAP benefits with help buying groceries due to lost income or damages following a disaster like Hurricane Ida.

This program is not approved yet, but you can pre-register now, here

All residents impacted by Ida can preregister for DSNAP by texting LADSNAP to 898211.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Recipients

Louisiana participants in SNAP can use their benefits to purchase “hot” or prepared foods through September 28, 2021, following a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Service (FNS)

Generator Safety

If you're using a generator, please follow safety precautions. Here's a helpful article from Ochsner Health, which says:

  • Always follow manufacturer instructions when setting up a generator.

  • Never use a generator inside your home or garage.

  • Only use a generator outside in a well-ventilated area.

  • Place your generator at least 20 feet away from your home.

  • Double check that the exhaust is pointed away from any doors of vents.
